Living in Orillia

Orillia is a small but busy city located on the north side of Lake Simcoe a short drive from Barrie. Orillia has a population over 30,000 people with a lot of retirees looking for year-round recreational housing but not too far from civilization. Orillia is located right at the edge of cottage country and the surrounding area offers parks, fishing, boating, and several annual festivals including fishing competitions, blues and jazz music festivals, and a Scottish festival. Casino Rama, operated by the local native Canadian tribe, is the city's largest employer, while the OPP headquarters is one of the largest government employers. Tourism of course provides seasonal work, while a number of high-tech and low-tech manufacturing operations employ many hundreds of residents.

Orillia offers nine elementary and four high schools, plus a satellite campus of Lakehead University on Colborne Street West and Georgian College has a large campus in Orillia on Memorial Avenue in the south end of the city. The city contains the 230-bed Soldier's Memorial Hospital in the downtown on Colborne Street West. The city operates a public transit system with four bus lines. Orillia is located 35 km northeast of Barrie, about 25 minute drive from Highway 400, which reaches from the GTA to northern Ontario. Highway 11 passes through Orillia and heads north to Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Huntsville, and North Bay. Orillia is located approximately 95 km north of the GTA, too far to commute, which explains why Orillia is a major destination for retirees who want waterfront living and recreation but not GTA housing prices.
